The Invisible Empire: Confronting the Scandinavian Colonial Amnesia
Jeannette Ehlers
Eva Livjin Ohlin, Stockholm
Jeannette Ehlers uses documentary and digital manipulation of both photography and video to navigate a narrative that is often times not discussed and overlooked in general historiography. Her works retraces the footsteps of colonialism and thus directly confronting the Scandinavian amnesia. Jeannette Ehlers’ work takes the form of simple interventions, video and performance that enhance or animate a complex history with memory, race, body, identity and colonialism. Ehlers directly puts these topics under the microscope dissecting them and allowing them to surface within spaces of often invisibility, linking her own heritage and past histories of colonial exploitation to modern day issues of human trafficking and slavery and the lack of transparency surrounding these issues.
